100 Good Wishes Quilt

It is a custom to invite 100 people to contribute a single square patch of cloth. The 100 patches are sewn together into a quilt that contains the luck, energy, and good wishes from all the families and friends who contributed a piece of fabric. The quilt is then passed down from generation to generation. This type of quilt is fairly common in China and has become popular in the Chinese adoption community.

The person sending the piece of fabric also sends a wish on a piece of paper. It is ideal if you place a small piece of the fabric on the paper containing the wish so that we can associate the wish with the fabric and the person who sent the fabric. The 100 good wishes and a scrap of the fabric are then collected in a scrapbook for the child to look at, feel, and read when he/she is old enough to understand. The wish can be for good health or some other positive life outcome. For example, you may want to send a piece of fabric with musical notes and include your wish “I wish for your baby a love of music,” or a smiley face fabric and a wish “for a lifetime of happiness.” Ladybugs are a sign of good luck in the Chinese adoption community. It is said that if you see ladybugs that good things will happen soon! Because of this, many people like to include fabrics with ladybugs.

If you choose to be included in our 100 Good Wishes Quilt (and we would be so honored if you did!) the squares should be at least 6 1/2”x6 1/2” pieces of fabric - 100% cotton, prewashed and ironed. (Please e-mail me and I will send you our mailing address. Just send the folded fabric and the good wish in a regular envelope.)

If you need our address or have any questions, we are happy to email it to you. Please contact Alaina or Dan.
